Tax Relief
The Knox County Trustee’s Office administers a State funded Property Tax Relief Program to assist the elderly, 100% disabled, or 100% disabled veteran homeowners with their property taxes. For applicants who qualify, the State of Tennessee will reimburse a portion of their property taxes for their primary residence*. For the elderly, you must be 65 or older; and for the disabled, you must be rated by S.S.A. as ‘totally and permanently’ disabled. With both, the 2010 total household income must have been less than $26,830**.
*Relief or Reimbursement Amounts:
- Qualified Elderly and 100% qualified Disabled homeowners: up to $147.00
- Disabled Veteran homeowners, who are a total and permanent disability rated: up to $1030.00. Widows also qualify
- * First time applicants must pay their property taxes in full before the application can be submitted.

Tax Freeze
The State of Tennessee has passed legislation that permits counties to “freeze” property tax amounts for homeowners who are 65 or older and the 2010 Total household income was less than $36,050. The program will keep the amount of property taxes billed from increasing, not the assessment **.
